Dissertation Abstract: Using ethnographic and oral history methodologies, I will explore the choices of families willingly living without the technologies that many would claim to be essential to daily life. I will examine the differences in the ways that families view various literacies, with particular attention paid to alternative literacies that are emphasized within the family unit. I will look into the broad and fundamental assumptions that technological literacy is more valuable than any other form of literacy.
